NFTs in gaming are quickly becoming the signifier of companies to point and laugh at. So far, the induction of Non-Fungible Tokens into the gaming world has been chaos, with even the most popular attempt of Ubisoft's Quartz being met with relentless hate and a generally minimal takeup for the transferable items.

We've seen before that NFTs in games don't work, but it certainly won't keep companies from trying to make a quick buck off the back of digital collectables. And now, one company have been forced to close its NFT project less than 48 hours after it launched.

What Happened to Team17's NFT Worms?

After trying to make Worms NFTs a thing, Team17 has been forced to cancel its plans to release the immeasurably ugly collectables after a revolt from fans and fellow game studios alike.

After announcing the MetaWorms art project on Twitter, the team was met with cries of dismay from fans - suggesting that there's no point in such a project beyond making profits in a cheap manner. Team17 seems to have listened, and the day after the project was revealed, it was publicly binned.

"Team17 is today announcing an end to the MetaWorms NFT project," reads the announcement tweet. "We have listened to our Teamsters, development partners, and our games' communities, and the concerns they've expressed, and have therefore taken the decision to step back from the NFT space."

What's Going On With NFTs?

This project was clearly the last straw for a few developers, and other game studios have decided that this move was more than enough to make a direct statement about their game's involvement with the practice.

Going Under's AggroCrab and Yooka-Laylee's PlayTonic have come forward in the wake of MetaWorms to confirm that they have zero intention of following in Team17's footsteps. Though gamers have made their voices heard on NFTs, companies keep trying it on - and it simply isn't paying off. It's high time that gaming companies pack it up, because it clearly isn't working.
