The Developer Direct which took place earlier this week gave Xbox fans a lot to think about when it comes to upcoming titles.
While it wasn’t announced at the conference, some fans are convinced that a Quake 6 teaser was included in the gameplay for one of the more anticipated upcoming titles: Indiana Jones and the Great Circle.
Xbox fans think they’ve spotted a Quake 6 teaser in Indiana Jones gameplay
During the recent Developer Direct, a Resetera user noticed something unusual during the Indiana Jones gameplay reveal at the end of the stream.
Written on a whiteboard, at roughly the 44:44 mark in the live stream, is the phrase ‘AKE6’ with a large Q, resembling the Quake logo, written beneath it.
Obviously, this doesn’t actually confirm anything, which several people in the comments of the Resetera post were quick to point out.
“How could there be Quake 6 without Quake 5?” asked one.
Another joked: “Skyrim RemAKE 6.”
“Joke's on you, it actually says Alan Wake 6,” teased a third commenter.
Despite this, it does seem like a pretty clear reference to Quake 6 given the giant Q beneath the text.
It is worth noting that it seems as though Quake Champions was regarded internally as Quake 5, despite not actually being named that officially, so they haven’t just skipped a number for fun.
Quake fans are excited but scared to get their hopes up
Based on the general reaction to the teaser online, it seems that the majority of Quake fans are hopeful that this could be hinting towards a future release but also nervous about being let down.
“We're so back. Machine Games confirmed for Quake 6 baby! Call of the Machine was dope,” wrote one Reddit user.
Another said: “I imagine this is just a joke, but man, there would be nobody I’d trust better to make a brand new Quake than CZG and the gang.”
“Probably just a joke but I’m in regardless. Really want to see Quake have a big revival,” commented a third.
As to why the words were written on the board in the first place, it is hard to say. the showcase was clearly well planned out, so it seems as though it was unlikely to be an accident.
Most likely, it seems as though it may have been a joke, either with the fans as a sneaky easter egg, or something internally that wasn't meant to be taken seriously.
Either way, if it was intended as a teaser, it is unlikely that we will hear anything about a Quake 6 for a little while yet since the focus is currently on Indiana Jones and the Great Circle.
