PlayStation blinked first, revealing the PS5 Pro earlier this month, and responses have been mixed to say the least. While some are excited to hit 4K and 60 FPS without sacrificing either side of that equation, the price has caused a bit of a storm.

Microsoft has kept quiet on its console plans, however, but that could all change soon. According to a new report from Windows Central, the company is reportedly working on its next console - and a portable rival for the Steam Deck.

Microsoft could be working on two consoles

According to the report, Microsoft isn't planning to compete with the PlayStation 5 Pro and is instead working on a more traditional next-generation console rather than a mid-gen refresh.

The report suggests it might not be the only console the tech giant is working on, either, with the company reportedly looking to make headway "with its own take on the Steam Deck".

It's not a lot to go on, admittedly, and the report suggests Microsoft should look to Xbox's 25th birthday next year (November 15, for those wondering) for a "poignant" launch date.

Microsoft famously kicked off a generation earlier than Sony's PS3 with the arrival of the Xbox 360, and it paid dividends combined with a strong game lineup before the PS3 even hit shelves - could we see the same happen again?

Time for a Halo return?

In an interview with License Global, Xbox's head of Gaming Consumer Products John Friend says the company is looking to celebrate the big 25th anniversary of both Xbox and the game that launched with it - Halo.

“We’re building plans for the 25th anniversary of ‘Halo’ and Xbox—we have such a rich heritage and history, and these communities have been active for so long, you have to celebrate that," Friend says.

Halo Infinite, which launched in 2021, was a divisive entry in the series that saw players drop off relatively quickly despite promises that it would mark a platform for years of ongoing Halo updates. Could Microsoft tee up a new Xbox console with a Halo return? Time will tell.
