The shooter world has been too quiet for too long, save for the giant that is Call of Duty and the Battle Royale big-hitters coming for its throne.

There have been many competitors to enter the shooter space (with many largely managing it, pushing the BR to the new industry standard), but few have been able to match CoD and its short-burst matches with an arcadey flair - though the franchise has rubbed many players the wrong way with repetition and finicky metas.

The next best thing, it seemed, was Ubisoft's free-to-play XDefiant when it entered its online beta, before it ducked out of view not to be seen again, and fans have been wondering what's next.

And now, thankfully, we finally have the lowdown on when we can expect to see the game kick back into gear. and it's soon.

XDefiant finally announces release date - and it's for this month

We definitely didn't want to wait much longer for XDefiant, so it's good news that we won't have to.

Ubisoft has revealed in a short teaser video that the game is finally coming soon and is gearing up for its first ever preseason matches as a full and complete game.

With an animation of raining bullets and a weapon being put together, Ubisoft has revealed that XDefiant is finally hitting PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Ubisoft Connect on PC on May 21. That's only a few weeks away.

It's huge news for shooter fans who have struggled to latch onto any competitors like THE FINALS - but now we at least know that a new rival is coming, and it's coming as quickly as it can. Who knows - a new era of shooters could be about to begin. It's wishful thinking, but can you blame us?
