Something is going bump in the night over at Nintendo, as the spooky Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club has just landed a release date on the Nintendo Switch. Emio caused a stir when it shared a teaser for the mysterious "Emio", featuring a well-dressed person with a bag on their head.

We now know Emio - The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club is the first new entry in the Famicom Detective Club series in 27 years - last seen in 1997's BS Tantei Club: Yuki ni Kieta Kako. With some time away to gather its thoughts, it looks like the wait has been well worth it thanks to this being a lot darker than your typical switch game.

Emio - The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club lands a release date on Switch

Nintendo has confirmed that Emio - The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club is coming on August 29. You play as an assistant private investigator and try to track down the gruesome Emio, the Smiling Man - a supposed urban legend.

A student is found dead with a paper bag depicting Emio's signature sinister grin, sparking an investigation as the police try to solve a murder that's remained unsolved for 18 years. Is this the return of the fabled serial killer or a copycat inspired by the crimes of the Smiling Man?

For the first time in the Famicom Detective Club series, the familiar face of Ayumi Tachibana is playable during select sections. Teaming up as a dynamic duo, you'll reportedly "dive deeper into this intense story of suspicion, isolation and fragility."

If you still aren't sold, there's a three-part demo that covers the first three chapters of the game, letting you experience its opening for free. The demo goes live on August 20, with the first demo including the Prologue and Chapter 1. Chapter 2 is coming on August 23, while Chapter 3 rounds out the pack on August 28.

Better yet, any progress from the demos will be carried through to the full version if you decide to buy it. Emio piqued our interest when it first arrived, and for those who love a bloody murder mystery, let's hope it lives up to its hype.
