Easily the best part of scouring the interest before a massive video game releases is finding the various wild theories out there in the depths of Reddit. While some of us are determined to figure out whether that's a Cal Kestis clone in the Jedi: Survivor bacta tank, others are obsessed with the latest Zelda game.
As the sequel to the beloved Breath of the Wild, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, is poised to be one of 2023's biggst games. Looking like a faithful evolution of the story, we've already been thirsting over Daddy Ganondorf and imagining what we're going to craft with the new fusing mechanic.
Wild Zelda theory connects Tears of the Kingdom to Avengers: Infinity War
More than we can remember with previous Zelda games, the thoeries are out in full force. When in the complex Zelda timeline is this set, what are the titular "tears" in Hyrule, and could Ganondorf be the hero this time around? Now, there's a wild theory that TotK is a secret Avengers: Infinity War remake.
Over on Reddit, u/JuanK noticed a number of spaces on Ganondorf's necklace, suggesting that he could be touring Hyrule and trying to collect the seven tears. The first Tears of the Kingdom trailer featured a mysterious carving of what looked like a Zonai, surrounded by seven tear-shaped relics.
It's unclear what the titular tears are for, but as the likes of Ocarina of Time had Link hunting for parts of the Triforce, a quest for players to nab all seven tears sounds logical. Having Ganondorf chase us on the same mission would be reminiscent of Infinity War and Endgame's quests for the Infinity Stones.
What Ganondorf would do once he has all seven tears remains to be seen, but with darkness descending on the kingdom in the final trailer, his plan might succeed. It all lines up with Link being sent back in time to try and stop Ganondorf from getting them all, which is particularly Endgame-esque.
Others loved the idea that Nintendo would homage to the beloved Avengers movies. One supporter wrote, "Nintendo watched Endgame and were like 'That's the fit,'" while another added, "It's not like the Zelda devs couldn't have been influenced by 'Avengers: Infinity War' back in 2018 when conceptualizing this game."
A third noticed that the mummified Ganondorf we saw in the first trailer ties to the tear theory and added, "I'm currently thinking that Ganondorf in the past actually did obtain all (or many) of the tears before being sealed, but the tears were removed from his body."
What other Tears of the Kingdom theories are there
The "Thanondorf" theory is a popular one, but it isn't the only one. Another Reddit theory suggests that Ganodorf is actually innocent and the Zonai are the real villains - using him as a battery and effectively possessing him.
We've been speculating about the line where Zelda says, "Please, lend him your strength," so it's possible Zelda is asking Ganondorf to fight alongside Link. The "hero" Ganon theory has been doing the rounds for a while, and we've got to admit, it's getting stronger.
Ultimately, we won't know what's going on with Tears of the Kingdom until we're loading up Hyrule on May 12. In the meantime, we're back to trawling Reddit for more tin foil theories that Hidemaro Fujibayashi has been ripping off the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
