A new era beckons for Call of Duty, and if one element of the multiplayer experience needs to improve in the transition from Vanguard to Modern Warfare 2, it's the map design.

Vanguard's map selection has been heavily criticised throughout the year. Only four maps have been viable in a competitive setting (Tuscan, Berlin, Bocage, and Desert Siege), and few others making for a good casual experience either (namely Eagles Nest and Casablanca). The fundamental landscape completely failed to live up to previous years, while even those viable maps won't go down as classics.

Heading into Modern Warfare 2, it's about time that the map design was nailed down to a tee. Now, thanks to a slip of the tongue by well-connected ex-professional turned chat show host Thomas "ZooMaa" Paparatto, it appears that the developers have created a huge pool of maps that pros are already loving.

ZooMaa Leaks Modern Warfare 2 Will Have 16 Multiplayer Maps At Launch

Talking on-stream, ZooMaa revealed that Infinity Ward has a huge 16 maps ready to go at launch, and although this number is replicable of Vanguard's total too, all 16 will be tailored to 6v6 gameplay.

Despite pro players having a tendency to hide their true opinions behind PR-pressed messages, ZooMaa revealed that those that have played the game already have loved it, and its selection of "16 maps in total".

We already know that a few of these maps will be remastered designs such as Quarry, and Los Angeles Rams NFL players leaked another named Valderas Museum. Already, there's plenty to have us hopeful that CoD is about to turn a corner.

ZooMaa Claims Pros Already Love Modern Warfare 2 Maps

"From what I've heard, people have been talking the next game up. They enjoyed it. They enjoyed the game and the maps that they played," said ZooMaa.

"Players have played four maps. There are 16 maps in total. They played four maps, and two out of the four maps they loved and thought were really good," he added.

A 50% ratio on favourable multiplayer maps strikes as an impressive statistic in the early tests. If there are 16 multiplayer maps at launch, eight good solid maps will prove Modern Warfare 2 to have the most well-rounded experience since the Modern Warfare 2 of old.

For those looking to get an early look at Modern Warfare 2, the professional's World Championships stream will be dishing out 50,000 beta keys during the Grand Final on Sunday, where you can try out some of the multiplayer maps for yourself.
