Apex Legends Alter abilites, tips & best weapons
Alter is the latest Legend to debut in Apex Legends, let's rundown her abilities, best weapons, some tips on how to play her, and her background in the story.
Alter is the enigmatic new character in Apex Legends, bringing her world-changing abilities into the fold. Apex Legends has kicked off Season 21 with a brand-new Legend who brings her dimension-hopping abilities into the fight.
If you want to learn about Alter's abilities, lore, and some tips for playing her, we have you covered. Here is everything you need to know before you drop into the game.
Alter's abilities
Ability | Effect |
Passive - Gift from the Rift | Remotely interact with a deathbox to claim one item. Cannot be a shield core. |
Tactical - Void Passage | Creates a portal passageway through a surface. |
Ultimate - Void Nexus | Create a regroup point that all allies can remotely interact with to open a phase tunnel back to that location. |
Alter's kit revolves around her ability to teleport through surfaces or to a designated location with her ultimate. This makes her incredibly manoeuvrable and tricky to deal with, as we will discuss below.
Tips and tricks
Alter's passive ability, Gift from the Rift, allows you to take a single item from another player's deathbox from a distance. This is just a broadly useful ability, but an excellent side effect is that it also highlights deathboxes from a distance. While you're playing Alter, remember to keep an eye out for deathboxes as they can be a great source of information.
As you aim the Void Passage ability, you'll be told whether or not it can be used on the surface you are aiming at. This includes floors and ceilings, which can create some interesting situations. Firing it at a high ceiling will create a beam that drops to the floor, which you can step into to teleport straight up.
Also, there are situations where you can use Void Passage on a surface that doesn't have an empty space directly behind, above, or below it. In these cases, you will pop out somewhere nearby, which can be a great way to throw off a pursuing enemy and retaliate from an unexpected angle.
The Void Nexus ultimate ability creates an instant teleport back to a designated location, but you need to bear in mind that the teleporter persists and other players can also use it. This includes enemies, so if you do use it in a firefight, be wary of opponents popping through after you. This can be a great way to spring a trap, so use it wisely.
Best weapons to use
With her teleporting abilities, Alter is best suited to close-range weapons. Shotguns and SMGs are your best friends for a breach-style, run-and-gun strategy. For this, we recommend:
- Peacekeeper Shotgun
- Volt SMG
- EVA-8 Shotgun
- R-99 SMG
These weapons are great when paired with Void Passage for getting the drop on unsuspecting opponents and blasting them down quickly. For a more hybrid style, you could pair one of the above with a longer-range weapon to be prepared for any situation.
Alter's backstory
According to the Apex Legends website, Alter's past is a mystery as she is from an unknown dimension. Her favourite pastime is hopping between dimensions with her Void tech and visiting worlds on the brink of destruction.
Alter's only motivation is her own amusement, getting what she wants by any means necessary and then disappearing before facing any consequences. Her infatuation with apocalypses comes from her disdain for people, believing they only show their true selves in the face of annihilation.
Alter is not above causing these catastrophes herself, purely for her own enjoyment.
