Finally, the Assassin's Creed Mirage release date has been announced, and we have also had our best look yet at what we can expect from the next game in this long-running series.

So far, Assassin's Creed Mirage appears as though it will be a much more compact experience than what we have received in previous years, acting as a callback to what made these games so popular in the first place. Let's take a leap of faith into everything we know so far about Assassin's Creed Mirage, including the release date, setting, and gameplay details.

Assassin's Creed Mirage release date

Baghdad in Assassin's Creed Mirage

Assassin's Creed Mirage was initially supposed to release on October 12, 2023. However, in a surprise move, Ubisoft has moved the release date forward to October 5th, 2023. That's a whole extra week early! It's not often that a game will get its release date moved forward, but we're glad to see it on this occasion.

The reason for the release date move appears to be because Assassin's Creed Mirage has gone Gold earlier than expected. This means that the game is ready to be printed onto retail discs and shipped. However, we can still expect a weighty day-one patch.

Either way, we don't have long to wait at all until we can strap on our hidden blades and explore the streets of Baghdad.

Assassin's Creed Mirage setting

Mirage will be set in Baghdad in the year 861 AC. That's around 20 years prior to the events of Assassin's Creed Valhalla, which was released in 2020. This makes sense, as the main protagonist is none other than Basim Ibn Ishaq, a key character in Valhalla.

According to a story synopsis provided by Ubisoft, Mirage will follow the story of how Basim came to join the order of the Hidden Ones. During this period, we'll become familiar with his mentor figure, Roshan. She is voiced by award-winning actress Shohreh Aghdashloo, and follows his journey from street thief to Master Assassin.

While Assassin's Creed Mirage may be open world once again, it isn't in the same capacity as Origins, Odyssey, and Valhalla. Instead, Ubisoft is touting Mirage as a return to the more linear style of missions and storytelling.

We'll still be able to explore the streets of Baghdad and undertake missions in whichever order we so choose. However, the world will be far smaller and much more densely populated than the expansive plains of England, Greece, or Egypt.

The tighter focus will likely have a huge effect on the moment-to-moment gameplay, too. With a much heavier focus on social stealth mechanics, picking a fight with a huge group of enemies will no longer be the preferred option. Mirage is set to be a homage to the original Assassin's Creed games, with a focus on using parkour to manoeuvre through densely populated cities.

In the gameplay trailer, we've seen the return of gameplay mechanics like social stealth, which sees Basim blend in with pedestrians to evade detection. There's also a distinct return to relying on gadgets, with appearances from smoke bombs, blow darts, and noise makers all in the Ubisoft Forward gameplay trailer.

Assassin's Creed Mirage trailers

The first trailer for Assassin's Creed Mirage trailer was a cinematic, as we have come to expect from Assassin's Creed, highlighting this game will focus on the rise of Basim within the Creed. It also gave us an insight into what we can expect from Baghdad in its Golden Age as a setting for the game.

The second trailer not only gave us the release date but also showcased how this world would look in the game with a rich tapestry of colours adding to what looks to be a bustling city. We also got to see parkour and stealth returning to the forefront of the franchise for the first time in a while. We expect to see even more in the build-up to the release later in the year.

We got a first proper look at gameplay in the trailer released at Ubisoft Forward 2023. This new trailer showed a little bit of what it's like to parkour through Baghdad, as well as engage in the more stealthier combat that series veterans will appreciate.
