Multiplayer is going back to basics with Black Ops 6, with the most classic of game modes returning from Call of Duty’s past.

Fans of the series will surely be pleased to see some familiar playlists return, with one new addition that looks to add a bit of variety to a relatively familiar set of modes.

All game modes in Black Ops 6 multiplayer

  • Kill Order
  • Team Deathmatch
  • Domination
  • Hardpoint
  • Face Off
  • Gunfight

At launch, there will be six game modes for you to enjoy, with most of them returning from previous games in the series. However, Treyarch has added some quality-of-life improvements to several of these modes, so they should feel slightly improved over what we’re used to.

Below, I’ll walk you through each of the available modes and explain how some of them have changed this year.

Kill Order

Kill Order game mode in Black Ops 6

Kill Order is the brand new mode in Black Ops 6, and it revolves around High-Value Targets (HVTs).

Each team of six players will have one Operator who’s marked as an HVT. The objective is to protect your HVT while eliminating the enemy’s.

HVT players earn more points for the kills they rack up, but the enemy earns more points if they eliminate the target. Points are still scored for normal eliminations as usual, so it’s a bit like TDM but a little more spicy.

It sounds like a risk/reward balancing act that teams must find to reach the score limit first.

There’s also a Face Off variant of this mode which disables Scorestreaks and only takes place on the smaller Strike Maps. That truly sounds like chaos!

Team Deathmatch

I’ll be honest, this one is pretty much what it says on the tin.

There aren’t many ways you can evolve the classic formula of Team Deathmatch, and Treyarch has adopted an ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ approach here.

Two teams of six players fight it out to see who can rack up the most amount of kills the fastest. A simple task, but an endlessly enjoyable one.

Domination

You’ve likely seen this one before too - teams fight it out for control of three individual objective capture points. Points tick up more quickly depending on how many capture points are in a team’s possession.

Treyarch has tweaked this mode slightly by making the capture area of objectives much larger. In previous Call of Duty games, you almost had to sit directly on the flag, making it easy for the enemy to predict your location.

Now, the zones are wider and more clearly marked, opening up more scope for players to be tactical while capturing the objective.

Hardpoint

Hardpoint in Black Ops 6

Hardpoint is similar to Domination in that teams of six are fighting for possession of a capture point. However, Hardpoint only has one objective at any one time, and it moves around the map after a timer runs out.

Again, Treyarch has tweaked this one slightly by adding in numbers to each Hardpoint zone that spawns. This is supposed to give players something to call out to their teammates for tactical advantage, but if I’m being honest, I’m not sure it’s a completely drastic innovation. Maybe I need to see it in action…

Face Off

Face Off isn’t a mode in and of itself but is rather a twist on the modes mentioned above.

If you queue for a Face Off version of Team Deathmatch, Domination, or Hardpoint, the match will play out in almost exactly the same way. The only difference is that scorestreaks are disabled.

Gunfight

Last up on the list is Gunfight, which is a smaller focused mode that takes place on the Strike maps. It’s 2v2 and round-based, with no respawns until the end of each round.

Teams win when they either eliminate all enemies or capture an objective that spawns in the centre of the map after a certain time.

Another twist is that each player has the exact same loadout, so every round is (in theory) a level playing field. It’s the perfect mode for those who want to test their skills in more personal battles.

More modes will likely be added as seasonal content down the line. We’ll update this guide when we learn more.
