How to play co-op in Dead Island 2
Check out our explainer of playing co-op in Dead Island 2, which covers how to unlock the mode, along with how to enable it and play with friends.
Like the previous games in the franchise, Dead Island 2 has a cooperative focus, allowing multiple friends to join up and play the game together. However, you will need to first unlock and then activate the cooperative play, which can be confusing for some players. So, take a look at our explanation of playing co-op in the game
How do you play co-op?
Before you can take part in co-op, you will need to start the main story quest called 'Call The Cavalry' and then exit Emma Jaunt's house in Bel-Air.
Upon leaving the house, you will get a pop-up message (shown in the image above), confirming that you can start playing co-op. There are a couple of ways you can activate the mode to join friends or vice versa:
- Once the pop-up appears, you can press the button prompt (F1 on PC) to look at your online options and select the lobby type.
- You can also exit to the main menu, select 'Continue', and then choose the lobby type from the next menu before loading back into a game.
There are four lobby types for the Dead Island 2 co-op:
- Single Player - Deactivates co-op and ensures no one can join you.
- Public - Enables co-op and allows anyone to join you.
- Invite Only - Enables co-op and only allows players you have invited to join.
- Friend Only - Enables co-op and only allows players on your friends list.
If you are looking to play with your friends, you'll want to set the lobby type to invite or friend only. You also won't need to change it every time you play, so you can all just load up the game and continue your playthrough together.
