I mostly used the Solar Numen stave for my Mage build in Dragon’s Dogma 2, as it guaranteed me that little extra boost of power when I was forced to travel at night. As pesky as those skeletons are, they quickly fall to the power of the Arisen’s spells.
Like the Sorcerer, you’ll want to utilise Core Skills that will buff you and your Pawns, so having Quickspell to cast quickly is a no-brainer. But, perhaps the most essential Core Skill in this class is Anodyne, which creates an area where you and your Pawns can recover health for a short period.
The same can be said for the Mage's Augments. Beatitude is by far the best of the bunch, as it increases the potency of curative items and spells. When paired with Perpetuation which extends the duration of enchantments, you can keep your healing spaces up for longer and provide more time to heal mid-battle.
For rings, I stuck with the Ring of Triumph, as it provides an overall bonus to health, stamina and carry weight, alongside the Ring of Percipience for a Magick boost so that spells hit harder overall.
Best Mage Weapon Skills in Dragon’s Dogma 2
- High Halidom
- High Empyrean
- High Flagration
- High Frigor
For this Mage build I want to balance out defensive and offensive spells so that when the going got tough, I could retreat to the curative zones I had created and pepper enemies with attacks from afar.
High Halidom and High Empyrean are some of the best spells you can run on Mage to act as a barrier between you and the enemy, all the while being able to cure you of status ailments and restore your health.
However, attack is also pivotal, which is why I’ve organised a fire and ice combo in High Flagration and High Frigor. While High Flagration is the game’s equivalent of a flamethrower, High Frigor has devastating knockdown potential.
Throwing enemies into the air with an icy spike gives your Pawns a chance to move in for the attack while they attempt to compose themselves. Moreover, if you’re using it frequently against an enemy with a high health bar, you may be able to freeze them and you can throw the icy blocks that get left over to deal even more damage.
Best Mage Weapons in Dragon’s Dogma 2
- Solar Numen
- Battahli Sceptre
While several endgame staves will ultimately be better for your Mage’s weapon in the long run, I found that Solar Numen was a fantastic stave that can be bought relatively easily and affordably from Bakbattahl. It has a high Magick stat and can boost your powers when fighting at night.
If that doesn’t suit you, the Battahli Sceptre makes for a great alternative, with generally strong Magick potential but without the night-time enhancements.
How good is the Mage?
For a starting Vocation, the Mage is one of the best classes you’ll find in Dragon’s Dogma 2 and can quickly become a staple of your part, whether you’re playing as one yourself or have a Mage Pawn.
With its array of damaging and curative spells, you’ll have a vast repertoire of potential just waiting to devastate the next enemy that attempts to take you on.
If the Mage isn’t for you, there are plenty of other Vocations to choose from in Dragon’s Dogma 2, like:
