The Elden Ring Spirit Ashes are one of the most important abilities, and in true Fromsoftware fashion, this mechanic can be missed entirely. To make sure you don’t go through Elden Ring missing a key ability, make sure you follow these steps. While some spirits are little more than cannon fodder, there are a few that are outright broken. For more, here is Elden Ring Spirit Ashes: How To Unlock Spirit Summons.
- On your way to the Church of Elleh, you will run into the Tree Sentinel. For tips on how to take him on, check out Elden Ring Tree Sentinel: How To Beat The Tree Sentinel.
Elden Ring Spirit Ashes: Where To Go
The way you acquire this ability is so simple, yet very easy to miss. When you first emerge out into Limgrave at the start of the game, you will see a few things ahead of you. You will see White-Faced Varre, you will see the Tree Sentinel roaming in the distance, and you will see the Church of Elleh further up the hill. This Church is important for many reasons, chiefly for our current purposes.
The church is your first respite when you set out because there is a merchant called Kale and a table for upgrading your weapons. However, this church has another function. If you come here at night, you will find a witch sitting on part of the wall. Her name is Renna, and all you need to do is speak with her to receive the Spirit Calling Bell, as well as the Lone Wolves Ashes.

Elden Ring Spirit Ashes: How To Use Spirit Summons
With that, you have your first spirit summon. It is recommended that you assign Spirit Ashes to the slots in your pouch. This way, you can hold Triangle/Y and press a direction to instantly summon them. With your first Spirit Ashes, you can now summon three spectral wolves who will aid you in battle. In tough fights, these spirits can be absolutely crucial.
Spirits are best used in tough fights such as boss battles, but that is largely because they cannot be used anywhere you like. If you look at the left side of your screen, you will see a headstone icon pop up whenever you can use Spirit Ashes. This is also very useful because if the icon pops up, you know you are close to a tough enemy.
There are many Spirit Ashes throughout the game. Most are regular ash and these can be upgraded in Roundtable Hold with Grave Glovewort. Others, known as renowned ashes, are more important characters and often more powerful. Those ashes can be upgraded with Ghost Glovewort.
That is everything you need to know to start using Spirit Summons, and how to get more Spirit Ashes. For more on the game, check out Elden Ring Golden Seeds: All Golden Seed Locations.
