How to fix Fallout 4 save files not transferring to next-gen version
The Fallout 4 next-gen update has a bug where save files aren't reading properly on some players' consoles. Here's a quick fix to get you back up and running!
Highlights:
- There's a bug with the Fallout 4 next-gen update that causes old save files to not port over correctly
- You can fix this by deleting a duplicate save file in your console settings menu
The next-gen update for Fallout 4 has arrived, and while you might be excited to hop in and see what’s new, a bug is affecting some user save files that aren’t transferring over to the new version.
There’s lots to be excited about in the latest update for Fallout 4, including quests that add Hellfire Power Armour and even a Heavy Incinerator weapon. These quests are added to your quest log when you first load up the next-gen update on an existing save file, but if your saves aren’t transferring over, there’s an easy fix.
Fixing Fallout 4 save files on the new-gen update
Fallout 4 should automatically read your save files when you launch the game after updating, but if it doesn’t then you’ll need to find them on your PlayStation disk drive:
- Head into the ‘Save Files’ menu in the PS5 settings
- Click on the 'PS4' folder
- Look for the Fallout 4 folder and click on it
- You should see two save files in here, one more recent and another that’s slightly older
- Delete the slightly older file - this contains information relating to your game settings, not your game progress
- Head back into Fallout 4 and you should see your save file ready to select
Using this method does mean that you’ll need to set your game settings back up again, as it will wipe anything like UI customisation or remapped controls. However, it’s a small price to pay if it means you can continue using your save file with hundreds of hours invested into it.
While I didn’t have this issue crop up for me, this method was mentioned by users on the PSNProfiles forum, who explained that the method worked for several users.
I haven’t seen any reports of this issue occurring on Xbox platforms. However, if you do encounter the same issue on Xbox Series X|S, it’s worth looking in the save file locations on your platform and trying the same method, as it will also likely work for you.
