Is Final Fantasy 16 coming to PC?
For players wondering if Final Fantasy 16 is a timed exclusive for PS5, we've got the answer from Naoki Yoshida telling you if a FF16 PC port is on the way.
Since FF16's release, players have been wondering whether Final Fantasy 16 is a timed PlayStation exclusive, or if it will be eventually coming to PC further down the line.
Since the game from Square Enix released to acclaim from fans and critics alike, it's no wonder that people will want to know if Final Fantasy XVI ports on other platforms might be on the way - so here's a rundown of all we know so far.
Is Final Fantasy 16 a timed exclusive?
Yes, Final Fantasy 16 is a timed exclusive on PS5 for six months, as first revealed on a PlayStation Twitter advert back on 7 November 2022.
This was confirmed further when we got the official FF16 release date of Thursday, 22 June 2023 with its Game Awards trailer. At the end, it stated that the game will be “not available on other platforms” like PC until Sunday, 31 December 2023 at the very least.
Will Final Fantasy 16 come to PC?
A Final Fantasy 16 PC port is officially on the way, which is great news for FF16 fans old and new.
This was thanks to confirmation by Final Fantasy XVI producer Naoki Yoshida in the above video post from X (formerly Twitter) saying that development on both a PC version of the game and two paid DLC instalments is officially underway.
What do we know about Final Fantasy 16 on PC?
Besides knowing the Final Fantasy 16 port is officially in development, we only other thing we know about it is that development would take longer than the timed exclusivity period of six months. This was mentioned even earlier in the year, translated Japanese PlayStation Blog from February 2023 featuring Yoshida, revealing that the Final Fantasy 16 PC port “will not come out in half a year”.
He elaborated that this is because of the amount of time and money that was spent optimising Final Fantasy 16 for PS5 to make it deliver the best experience, indicating that the team is definitely not at the stage where they could say when a PC version would be ready.
For further context, Yoshida added that even if they started optimising for PC after the game came out on PS5, it could not be optimised in “such a short span of half a year”.
Since PC ports of any console game take a lot of time to optimise, it is a much more complicated technical matter than console by needing to be compatible with a variety of systems. Taking past games into account, Final Fantasy 15 took a year and four months to come out on PC after launching on console. Final Fantasy 7 Remake meanwhile, took a year and eight months.
Whilst we have no further information about FF16's PC port at this time, we'll be updating this guide as soon as we hear more.
