The Final Fantasy XIV Axolotl mount is a fan favourite, making it highly desirable to fans. Final Fantasy XIV players love to express themselves through their characters, whether that be through emotes, with their minions, or on their mounts.

The Axolotl mount, named Megaloambystoma, allows players to ride around on the back of a large and friendly-looking Axolotl, but getting it requires taking on some of the toughest content in the game. Here is everything you need to know to get the Axolotl mount in Final Fantasy XIV.

Unfortunately, the only way to get Megaloambystoma is to complete the Savage version of Anabaseios: The Twelfth Circle, also known as P9S. This is a relatively new dungeon that was added as part of Patch 6.4, and to complete it on Savage is a serious undertaking.

You will have to complete the normal version of this dungeon as part of Endwalker, then continue progressing through the game to complete the Eater of Souls - Guided by the Past series of quests to unlock the Savage versions. You will then need to work through the preceding circles of the dungeon to reach the twelfth circle.

The difference with a Savage dungeon is a sharp increase in difficulty, and a strict requirement to learn the mechanics of the boss fights. While Savage dungeons can be done via Party Finder, the coordination and strategy required to complete them makes this highly unlikely.

In order to get your hands on this giant floating Axolotl, one of the most adorable mounts in all of Final Fantasy XIV, you will need to be a seriously strong player and have up to seven friends of similar skill. This has caused some controversy, as many players believe that putting this kind of reward behind such high-level content locks average players out of achieving it.

Furthering players' woes, not only must you do the work to unlock and complete the Anabaseios: The Twelfth Circle (Savage) raid, but also only one player on the team will receive the Megaloambystoma Horn required to unlock the mount. As such, if you want this mount for yourself, you will need to either get very lucky, or play with a group who agree to give the horn to you.
