The latest update for Fortnite, Chapter 5 Season 1, has added the ability to modify your weapons, swapping out attachments to truly make your armaments your own.
However, finding a Mod Bench in the game isn’t as simple as it sounds, and there are a few hoops you’ll need to jump through before you can dive deep into modding your Fortnite weapons.
Where to find Mod Bench locations in Fortnite
To modify a weapon, you’ll first need to locate a Mod Bench. There are five of these benches located on the Fortnite map right now, and they’re each in one of the major locations:
- Snooty Steppes
- Fencing Fields
- Lavish Lair
- Reckless Railways
- Grand Glacier
To find a Mod Bench, look for a small white icon on the map that looks like a spanner inside a gear. I found two of the Mod Benches underground, so be sure to look around the area for steps leading down to hidden areas if you’re struggling to find one.
How to open Mod Bench vaults
Once you’ve found a Mod Bench location, you’ll notice that they’re locked inside vaults. These are in turn defended by NPC bosses, which you’ll need to defeat to receive a Society Medallion that unlocks said vault.
Simply look around the immediate vicinity to find the NPC boss and defeat it. Watch out, however - these locations are dropping hot spots, so it’s likely you’ll have to fend off enemy players at the same time as NPCs.
I died countless times trying to access the Mod Bench vaults early on in a match, so it might be worth looking to modify your weapons later in each Fortnite match you play.
Once you’ve acquired a Society Medallion from a boss, an arrow will appear leading you to the entrance of the vault. Stand nearby and it will unlock, revealing the Mod Bench inside.
What mods can you apply to your weapon?
Once you interact with a Mod Bench, you’ll be able to see mods that are currently applied to your weapons, as well as options to swap them out for different ones. Different weapons will have different mods available, but here are some of the options you’ll have to swap out on your weapon:
- Optic
- Underbarrel
- Magazine
- Barrel
New attachments can be purchased with Gold Bars, so you’ll need to make sure you’ve acquired a healthy collection before making your way to a Mod Bench. The good news is that vaults have stacks of Gold Bars you can hit with your pickaxe to stock up pretty quickly.
Applying a new mod to your weapon will change some of its stats, like how accurate it is or how much ammunition you can load it with. These might only seem like small changes, but they can add up when you’re fighting for the Victory Royale in the final circle.
