God of War Ragnarok has various sets of armour that cater to different playstyles, but some of them are still better than others from an objective stance. If you want to know which ones rule the roost in the nine realms, check out what is the strongest for both the early and late game.
Best armour in the early game
As you progress through God of War Ragnarok, you will acquire new armour and unlock sets that you can craft. Your choice is often either to change to a new set of armour, or upgrade your existing set.
Upgrading what you have is a viable way to continue to use any armour set you like throughout the game, you do not necessarily need to move on to newer armour sets.
As such, the best choice for the early game is a suit of armour that is powerful and easy to get. A great example of this is the Nidavellir armour set. This set is crafted from Nidavellir ore, which you get from destroying all of Mimir's mining rigs in Svartelfheim.
Once you have destroyed all three mining rigs, head to Brok or Sindri to get the Nidavellir armour made. The full set provides good defence, as well as a boost to strength, vitality and health regeneration.
It also gives you Stunning Restoration, which grants health when grabbing stunned enemies, and Stunning Persistance, which increases the time it takes for enemy stun level to start degrading.
This armour is a great all-around set with some really useful skills. Keep this set upgraded, and it will take you far through the game.
Best armour in the late game
As mentioned, different armour sets have different skills which work with different playstyles. For a suit of armour that pretty much works for anyone, and is also extremely good, the best option is the Steinbjorn armour set.
Much like the Nidavellir armour, the Steinbjorn set comes from completing a particular activity, but this one is less obvious. In fact, the Steinbjorn armour is a reward for completing a completely unmarked and mysterious questline. For the full details, check out our Mystical Heirloom guide.
Long story short, you need to use the Mystical Heirloom to awaken several trolls, then defeat them in a boss fight. Defeat all of them and take the Slumber Stones they drop to Brok or Sindri to craft the Steinbjorn armour set.
This armour is special because it is, by far, the toughest armour in the game. It grants a bit of strength, but overall the armour pours all of its points into defence.
This set makes you extremely survivable, and able to take mountains of damage. The set also grants a chance to stun nearby enemies when you take damage, and more importantly, it lets you regain health by doing damage shortly after getting hit.
