The Greek God of War has been a lot over his long life, spanning over nine games - but many players have been wondering how large the bearded warrior actually is, especially after seeing how much the God of Thunder Thor towers over our protagonist.

How tall is Kratos?

There have been differing heights for Kratos depending on which media in the God of War franchise they're referring to. However, thanks to a panel two Santa Monica Studio team members did for God of War (2018) shortly after its release, we finally have some accurate figures on how tall the Ghost of Sparta is and was.

Lead Narrative Animator, Erica Pinto, and Lead Character Technical Artist, Axel Grossman, hosted a panel at Gnomon — School of Visual Effects, Games & Animation in Los Angeles. Talking through the "lifecycle and workflow process of the cinematic animation and technical art teams", Grossman started talking through the comparisons of Kratos' physical proportions in the old games versus those in Norse Mythology.

From the 26:30 mark of the video above, Grossman provides a breakdown of how in the older games, Kratos had comic book-style proportions with a height of 7 feet and 6 inches tall, translating to 2.35 metres or 9 heads tall.

Moving onto God of War (2018) though, the team decided to give Kratos more realistic proportions. This was to not only better fit the game's art style, but to also match closer to the physique of Kratos' actor, Christopher Judge (six feet and in height) - so they would also have to account less for scaling when adapting motion capture footage.

Overall, this reduced a ton of room for error and workload for the animation team - all whilst making Kratos a more relatable character yet retaining his intimidating physicality.

So, with the adjusted realistic proportions for the Norse Mythology games, Kratos is now six feet and four inches tall in God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarok.
