Does GTA Online have crossplay & cross-progression for PlayStation, Xbox & PC?
Find out if GTA Online supports crossplay, as well as cross-platform progression, and how you can transfer your saves across Xbox, PlayStation, and PC.
GTA Online has been going strong for ten years now, with its player base scattered across various console and PC platforms - but if you're looking to make the switch or play with friends elsewhere, you'll need to know if crossplay and cross-progression are available.
The game has a lot of content at this point, with heists, businesses, clubs, and much more all available to players to make use of, but will you be able to keep everything you've collected when migrating platform?
Unfortunately, GTA Online does not support crossplay, meaning that you won't be able to play with your friends if they are on another platform.
This is partly because of just how old the game is, with a variety of different versions released over the years - on console, there's a PS3, PS4, and PS5 version of the game that all have differences. Crossplay would be a near-impossible feat.
It's likely that crossplay will also never get added to the game this late into its life cycle, though it's certainly a possibility for the next iteration of GTA Online that's expected with GTA 6.
GTA Online does support a form of cross-platform progression, but it isn’t seamless and only under the right conditions.
Essentially, you can migrate your GTA Online save to another console when upgrading to the PS5/Xbox Series X|S edition, but this is a one-time transfer. Once you have done it, you can’t do it again, and your progress will be wiped from the previous edition of the game you’re transferring from.
You can also only transfer your data between the same console brand, so you won’t be able to switch from Xbox One to PS5.
For people changing PCs or upgrading, you don't need to worry about this, as your saves and progress will be kept across your Rockstar Games account.
Here is everything you need to know if you're looking to transfer GTA Online saves between old and current generation consoles:
- Open GTA Online, pause the game, and then head to the ‘Game’ tab
- Now Select ‘upload save game’
- Boot up GTA Online on your next-gen console and login
- Make sure the new GTA Online is linked to your Rockstar Social Club account
- When logging in, you can select your previously uploaded character
If the process has worked correctly, you should be good to go, but if there is no character, make sure to go back over the steps above one more time.
