No, Zagreus isn’t in Hades 2… yet

Zagreus played an excellent role as the protagonist of the first Hades game, but he's nowhere to be seen in Hades 2. Here's what we know about his presence in the sequel.

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Zagreus only appears in a family portrait in Hades 2
  • He may be added as a fully-fledged character as part of the early access roadmap

Zagreus was the original protagonist in the first Hades game, and while fans thought he would be nearly impossible to replace, his half-sister Melinoe takes the spotlight in the sequel, Hades 2.

Despite being related to Melinoe (Zagreus is the son of Nyx, whereas Melinoe is the daughter of Persephone), he hasn’t appeared in any of the trailers for the game, and his voice actor isn’t even credited as voicing the character in the credits. I’ve played a good eight hours of Hades 2, and I can tell you that he hasn’t appeared in the game so far for me… but that’s not to say he won’t appear at some point.

Zagreus only has a small cameo in Hades 2 so far

Zagreus doesn’t appear physically in Hades 2 just yet - at least as far as I’ve played. He’s mentioned a couple of times during dialogue, though, with references to how he’s been captured by Chronos alongside his father.

The closest Zagreus comes to appearing in Hades 2 so far is that there’s a family portrait that includes him in Melonie’s tent. Just after where you respawn after dying, there’s a spot in the tent that you can interact with. Doing so brings up a portrait of Hades, Persephone, and Zagreus standing with a baby in tow - Melinoe.

Zagreus may appear in Hades 2 in the future

Given that Hades 2 is still in early access, there’s still every chance that he could be added later down the line. Supergiant’s roadmap for the game has stated that it intends to add new weapons, abilities, and (crucially) characters to the game.

Zagreus could certainly be one of those characters, although I’d imagine that the player would encounter him much later into the game once you’ve stopped Chronos’ assault on Olympus. If that happens, I’ll be sure to update this article.
