The short answer is no, Helldivers 2 isn't an open-world game. Instead, you'll embark on a mission in a specific area and you'll have to stick to the mission zone throughout.

It's possible that we'll find out more about the game's world after it comes out, but judging by the trailers and other marketing material there isn't going to be a large world to explore freely.

In Helldivers 2 you'll be teaming up with friends to take on missions. These will usually involve fighting against hordes of alien enemies, including insect creatures or robots.

You'll have mission objectives to complete within the area, and once you've completed them you'll move on to the next mission.

As far as we know the levels won't be open world, but it does look like there's quite a bit of space to move around in. During a preview, players could call in air strikes and would end up hurting their teammates if they were too close to them, so it'll be important to make the most of the space you're given in each mission.
