Is Hogwarts Legacy a PS5 exclusive? It's a valid question as Hogwarts Legacy has been shown exclusively via Sony events like the State of Play, but does that mean it is only coming to the new-gen console? With an expansive RPG, it would certainly benefit from the power of PS5, but that would leave players on other platforms like Xbox and PC high and dry, and in dire need of some wizarding adventures. Is Hogwarts Legacy A PS5 exclusive?
Click to enlargeDespite its ties to Sony, Hogwarts Legacy is NOT a PS5 exclusive. The site's official FAQ confirms the platforms Hogwarts Legacy will launch on, with the PS5 settling in alongside the PlayStation 4, Xbox One family, the Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Surprisingly, we saw a late addition to the console line-up, with a Hogwarts Legacy Nintendo Switch release on its way too.
The fact that Sony was the one to announce Hogwarts Legacy led some to believe it could be a PS5 exclusive. Sony has a number of PS5 exclusives, with the likes of Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Demon's Souls paving the way. Hogwarts Legacy might be confirmed as a current and next-gen title for PS4 and PS5, but just like Sony is toying with ditching its God of War: Ragnarok PS4 version, it's clear the PS5 is Sony's top priority right now.
Still, with a franchise as big as the Wizarding World, it makes sense for Warner Bros. Interactive to open the Gringotts vault and watch the galleons flow in. If Hogwarts Legacy belonged to a smaller IP, Sony could've held the keys to the kingdom, but with an open-world Harry Potter game having the potential to be one of the biggest releases in living memory, it was always destined for a multi-platform release.
Will The Hogwarts Legacy PS5 Version Get Any Special Treatment?
Click to enlargeDespite Sony not being able to hold onto Hogwarts Legacy as a PlayStation-exclusive title, that doesn't mean owners won't get some perks from having the souped-up console. Remember how Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War had some exclusive content with Zombies Onslaught, while elsewhere, the Maiden demo for Resident Evil Village was also an early gift if you had a PlayStation.
It's possible that PS5 and PS4 owners will be able to play before other platforms. Alternatively, there could be a special PlayStation bonus with an exclusive skin or extra content. Unfortunately, we just don't know yet.
The plus side is that you won't need a PS5 to play Hogwarts Legacy. Considering PS5 stock levels are still dangerously low, and getting your hands on Sony's next-gen console is a struggle, it's for the best that Hogwarts Legacy isn't locking other gamers out. Now, all we need is for Warner Bros. Interactive to announce Hogwarts Legacy multiplayer.
