While the world of Hogwarts Legacy may be crammed full of magical creatures and legendary beasts, sometimes it's the more simple things we crave. A common running theme in video games is players asking whether you can pet the dog. Well, in this case, the question is whether you can pet the cat.

The answer to that question is yes, and if you’re wondering how you can go about fussing with your feline friends, we have that answer for you as well.

Disclaimer: While the creator of the Harry Potter franchise was not directly involved in the creation of Hogwarts Legacy, their comments on social media around transgender people are hurtful and dangerous given the size of their platform.

We’d implore you to read our explainer of the controversy so far, and consider supporting trans rights charities where possible.

How do you pet cats?

Firstly, you’ll need to find a cat, and if you’re a fan of Harry Potter, you’ll know they’re fairly common across the grounds. While you won’t be stumbling into Crookshanks anytime soon, that doesn’t mean the students haven’t got their own kittens running amuck.

You can find them pretty much anywhere, both inside and outside the castle. Areas where we've often found cats include the courtyards and common rooms. You’ll be able to pet any cat you come across, so just keep exploring until you find one.

Once you see one roaming about, simply stroll up to it and an interactive prompt will appear. Press the corresponding button and it will trigger a cute cutscene where you kneel down to pet the cat.

There are no rewards for doing this, but as with other games, it’s simply a nice moment amongst the darker narrative that Hogwarts Legacy puts forward. While there do not appear to be any dogs you can pet in the game, this is the next best thing to scratch that itch.

We also have a guide on how to get the flying page in Hogwarts Legacy.
