The short answer is that Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 isn't a remake of the original MW2, but it's a loose reboot that shares many of the same characters, themes, and ideas. The original Modern Warfare trilogy and the new MW series are set in different timelines, though they have some similarities in the overall plot, and the characters who are involved. For example, Captain Price is one of the major characters in both the original trilogy and the reboot of MW. However, they are played by different actors and have different stories in both series'.
