Magic: The Gathering is seeing in the autumn in spooky style with Duskmourn: House of Horror.

The new set focuses on, as the name suggests, the most horrifying creatures in the Multiverse, and you'll find a wide variety of monsters and creepy spells, as well as fresh mechanics including Rooms and Manifest Dread.

Here's all we know about Duskmourn: House of Horror.

Key dates for Duskmourn: House of Horror

Duskmourn will debut on September 27, but as with just about any Magic The Gathering set, you can attend a prerelease event earlier than that.

Prerelease events will run from September 20 to 26, and you'll be able to get your prerelease boxes at your local game store.

All Magic: The Gathering Duskmourn cards so far

We'll have a full gallery of the new card art soon, but for now, you can see them on Wizards of the Coast's gallery.

Magic: The Gathering Duskmourn mechanics

Duskmourn's cards are creepy, and the mechanics certainly match that. Here's what we know so far:

Rooms

These split cards differ from prior ones in that they're split permanently. Players pick a half (called a Door) to decide which effects to trigger, but you can also pay mana to unlock the other side. Wizards' blog says "Unlocking a door this way is a special action that doesn't use the stack and can't be responded to" which means you might want to hold fire on one half knowing you can activate it later.

Manifest Dread

A new keyword action, players who manifest dread can look at the top two cards of their library and place one on the battlefield face down and one in the graveyard.

The one on the battlefield is a colourless 2/2 creature with no name, no creature types, no abilities, and no mana cost. It can be turned face-up by paying its mana cost, letting you spring a surprise on your opponent.

Survival

Survival abilities trigger at the start of your second main phase if your creature is tapped. That puts an added importance on turning your cards sideways to trigger these abilities that buff your cards, which should help me get over my reluctance to engage in combat like Outlaws of Thunder Junction did.

Eerie

These triggered abilities work whenever an enchantment enters and you've fully unlocked a Room (see above).

Impending

If you like planning in advance, you'll appreciate Impending. A new keyword, it'll let you play a Creature for an alternate cost. This will get them on the field sooner, but they're not a creature until a set number of turns passes.

Magic: The Gathering Duskmourn Commander Decks

There are four Commander Decks confirmed for this expansion, which are:

Deck Colour Identity Playstyle Commander

Death Toll

Black/Green "Fill your graveyard, reanimate monsters" Winter, Cynical Opportunist

Endless Punishment

Black/Red "Punish your opponents, make them pay" Valvagoth, Harrower of Souls

Jump Scare!

Green/White/Blue "Tricky instants, mysterious face-down cards" Zimone, Mystery Unraveler

Miracle Worker

White/Blue/Black "See the future, cast miracles" Aminatou, Veil Piercer
Which Commander deck will you be picking up? I'm torn between Death Toll and Endless Punishment, personally.
