It's a valid question, as most online multiplayer games on PlayStation require users to have a PlayStation Plus membership. However, the Modern Warfare 2 beta is a little different. MW2 Beta: Do You Need PS Plus?
In short, you don't need a PS Plus subscription to play the Modern Warfare 2 beta. While you will need a PlayStation Network account to download and access the game, you won't need to subscribe to one of the three PS Plus tiers to access multiplayer privileges. You'll be able to hop into a multiplayer match as soon as you've finished downloading the client.
Sadly, if you're playing on Xbox, you will still need to have an Xbox Live Gold membership to play online with your friends. PC players can rejoice in the free multiplayer services that they're used to.

Do You Need PS Plus For The Full MW2 Release?
While it's not required to own a PS Plus subscription to access the Modern Warfare 2 beta, that will change when the game releases properly on October 26th. As is usually the case with Call of Duty titles on PlayStation, you'll need to subscribe to PS Plus if you want to continue playing online multiplayer matches.
PS Plus is now separated into different tiers. However, you'll only need to subscribe to the lowest tier of PlayStation Plus 'Essential' to gain access to online services. This currently retails for £6.99 a month or £49.99 for the whole year.
