If you're confused about how bonus and ultimate perks work in Modern Warfare 2, you're not alone. Read our full rundown on how to unlock and use them in matches.
There are many changes when it comes to Modern Warfare 2, some of which have been embraced by the community more than others. If you grew up with the original Modern Warfare trilogy, you may feel completely lost when it comes to the latest iteration, with many new and unexplained systems in play.
One of the biggest changes to Modern Warfare 2 is how the perk system has changed. Up until this point, you simply picked a few perks for your classes and were able to play each match with them all equipped. This time around, things are a little different with the introduction of bonus and ultimate perks. If you’re stuck trying to get your head around it all, here’s everything you need to know about using bonus and ultimate perks in Modern Warfare 2.

How To Unlock Bonus And Ultimate Perks In MW2
If you’ve been playing around with your classes in Modern Warfare 2, you’ll most likely have noticed the inclusion of perk packages. These are highly customizable, much like your standard loadout, and allow you to pick from various perks. This time around you get to choose four, laid out in the form of the following three categories:
- 2 Base Perks
- 1 Bonus Perks
- 1 Ultimate Perks
While this is all well and good, Modern Warfare 2 never actually explains how to unlock these during a match. At first glance, it seems like an overcomplicated system, but in actual fact, is much simpler than it seems. You will begin the match with your two base perks, but quickly work towards unlocking your one bonus perk. This will slowly count down, but for every kill or objective you complete, the timer will speed up.
Once you’ve reached the threshold - which can be seen at the bottom of your HUD - the bonus perk will unlock. Next up is your ultimate perk, and exactly the same as your bonus perk will unlock over time. Again, to speed this up, play aggressively to minimize the amount of time needed until it becomes available to you.
It’s unclear why Infinity Ward went this way with Modern Warfare 2, but it blocks the more powerful perks from being used until the latter stages of the match. It also promotes players to spend less time camping in specific spots and jumping in to assist their team. Either way, now you have the knowledge of their uses, you should quickly unlock these in every match of Modern Warfare 2.
