Is Makarov In The MW2 Campaign?
Players will be excited to hear that Makarov does in fact make an appearance in the Modern Warfare 2 campaign. Well, sort of. The first mention we get of Makarov is in the final cutscene of the campaign while Taskforce 141 are sharing a drink with Kate Laswell. She's describing a new threat that has emerged in the wake of the final mission. After showing Captain Price a dossier on the new threat, he reveals that he recognises him instantly as Vladimir Makarov.
Those who played the original Modern Warfare games will know that Makarov was the mastermind behind the whole villainous plot in those first three games, despite only appearing first in Modern Warfare 2 (2009). It seems that Makarov may have also played a part behind the scenes of these rebooted Modern Warfare games, too.
If you were patient enough to wait out the closing credits of Modern Warfare 2, you'll know that there's a secret cutscene. Here, we see a mysterious figure constructing a weapon while on a flight. Afterwards, he pulls out a mobile phone where he receives a text message saying "No Russian." This is a callback to the infamous airport scene in the original Modern Warfare 2 where players were asked to mow down an entire departure lounge of civilians in a horrific terrorist attack.
The contact initial at the top of the text thread reads 'M', meaning that Makarov is once again planning a huge terrorist attack that involves aeroplanes. It's clear that Infinity Ward is setting up Makarov to be the next big villain in the new Modern Warfare timeline. Either we'll see this story continue in Spec Ops and Warzone, or the team will save that plotline for another Modern Warfare game in a few years' time.
