How to fix the 6036 dev error in MW2
Players are being stung with the Dev Error 6036 message since the last Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 update, but luckily, there are a few ways to fix this.
Remember the days when you’d simply pop in a disc and the game would work the first time? It appears those days are far behind us, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is the latest offender. Players are running into an error message referencing 'Dev Error 6036' which is causing their game to crash.
Players familiar with the series will maybe recognise this same error message from earlier this year when it appeared in Call of Duty: Warzone. It primarily affects Modern Warfare 2 PC players but has also been known to affect those on Xbox and PlayStation. If you’ve been hit with this nasty bug, then we have a few methods that could rectify the error message.
How to fix the error
Check For An Update
Your first port of all should be to check if there are any updates for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Whether you’re on PC, Xbox, or PlayStation, it’s entirely possible you’ve booted the game up before the latest patch went live or have not enabled automatic updates. If that’s the case, simply close the game and reload it. If you’re invited to download an update then this should rectify your issue.
It’s also worth manually checking to see if Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 needs updating. This is done in a specific way depending on each system. The update may not have been triggered due to a system glitch or because there’s not enough space on your system. Manually checking this should alert you of any issues if a new patch is live.
Verify Your Game Files On Steam
If you’re playing on Steam, it’s worth checking none of your game files have become corrupt. This is a simple process to complete and simply requires you to do the following:
- Find Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 in your Steam Library.
- Right-click the game tile.
- Click Properties.
- Click Local Files.
- Click on Verify Integrity of Game Files.
- Give it time to check.
This may rectify the issue if you’re on PC. However, if you’re still running into the 'Dev Error 6036' message, or you’re on console, we have a few more suggestions.
- If you're running into other issues, here's how to fix the Call of Duty: MW2 stuck on installing bug
Change The Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Interface Language To English
Following on from the issue that was present at the beginning of the year in Call of Duty: Warzone and Vanguard, it’s recommended to tweak your interface language settings. If you’re playing the game in another language, the next time you load up the game, attempt to change the interface language to English in the settings, and you may fix the error.
Ensure Your Drivers Are Up-To-Date
Another PC-specific issue could be tied to your GPU or graphics drivers. As PC owners will know, multiple driver updates for their hardware releases on a regular basis, and with a huge new release such as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, it’s entirely possible a new driver is available to download.
It’s not upcoming for new AAA titles to have a driver released alongside them, and it’s more than likely one has become available for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. In order to download your drivers, check on the manufacturer’s website, and they should be able to point you in the right direction to check if you require a download.
If any of these solutions don’t bring you any joy, we recommend reaching out to Infinity Ward or Activision’s support team who will be more than happy to assist in finding a solution for you.
