MW2 Receivers Explained: What Are They?
Weapon receivers in Modern Warfare 2 can look daunting, but they're really quite simple - here's how they work.
The weapon leveling system in Modern Warfare 2 has been overhauled drastically, and it all revolves around receivers. Gone are the days of unlocking attachments for each individual weapon as you grind to level it up. With so many weapons to choose from in Modern Warfare 2, Infinity Ward has alleviated some of the grind and introduced a more interesting weapon progression system with receivers. So, here is exactly how weapon receivers work in Modern Warfare 2.

MW2 Weapon Receivers: What Are They?
Weapon receivers in Modern Warfare 2 look like just another attachment, but they actually form the basis for every weapon in the game. Weapons are now separated out into different 'platforms', or skill trees. For example, using the M4 assault rifle will eventually unlock the 556 Icarus LMG and the FTac Recon battle rifle. There are five weapons on this platform altogether, and they each share the same pool of attachments.
The power of weapon receivers is that you can move a set of weapon attachments onto another weapon entirely within the same platform. Using the same example, if you've found a set of attachments that you really like on the M4 assault rifle, you can change the receiver to the FSS Hurricane and those attachments will now be on the SMG variant.
All of this is confusing at first glance, but once you use receivers they begin to become just another part of the weapon loadout system. If you're ever confused about receivers, you can always check which weapons are included in a certain platform by clicking on the 'Weapon Progression' button in the loadout menu. As more weapons get added to Modern Warfare 2, we'll surely see more receivers added to the mix, too.
