How to complete 'A Mysterious Box' in Octopath Traveler 2
Struggling with one of Octopath's toughest quests? Check out this guide to about completing A Mysterious Box in Octopath Traveler 2.
The 'A Mysterious Box' side story is one of the most mystifying that you will discover and attempt to decipher in the game's long run time. You won't gain access to it until very late in Octopath Traveler 2's cycle, but it can be a real challenge to figure out when you do get your hands on the strange box.
You might even encounter the strange cries of 'give it back' in Octopath Traveler 2 and not know what to do, but thankfully we've got you covered with a full rundown of the 'A Mysterious Box' side story below. Just make sure to read the whole guide to ensure that you don't miss anything.
Where can you find the Mysterious Box?
The Mysterious Box can be found in Merry Hills, which is in the south eastern corner of the map, and requires you to be around level 45 to reach. Head to the Shrine section of the city and then all the way in the back right should be a townsperson suffering from bad nightmares.
Speaking to them will start the side story, and to progress you will need to take the box away from them using Path Actions. Osvald's Mug, Throné's Steal, and Partitio's Purchase should all work, so just use whoever is in your party at that moment in time.
The townsperson will wake up 'cured', but you might notice that the quest is still incomplete - leading you to believe that there is something more to be done with this box of horrors. Carry on reading to see what you need to do next.
How do you complete the quest
Once you've nabbed the Mysterious Box off of the Young Collector, you will now want to head to the Southern Timberain Trail, which - as the name suggests - is south of Timberain. Continue along the path until you reach the save point just before Timberain, and then turn left and then south and you should encounter a dialogue box from '???' that states: 'Give it back…'
This will only occur if you have the Mysterious Box in your inventory, so make sure to pick it up using the steps above if you've not got it yet. You will want to continue down the path until you reach House Wellows Manor, and this is where things get a bit creepy.
Enter the Manor through the ladder on the right-hand side and there should be a few easy-access chests that you can pick up. Random encounters here are quite tough, but they eerily have no battle music, giving a real ghostly vibe to the place.
Make sure that you've got the time of day set to night, and then head into the room on the second floor in between the two staircases. There should be a woman waiting inside that you can talk to. Give her the Mysterious Box and a short cutscene will play that might not make too much sense either.
After this cutscene, you will be rewarded with 6,666 Silver Leaves and the Reaper's Sicle, and 'A Mysterious Box' side story will be officially registered as complete. However, there is still one more thing to find!
Head back onto the South Timberlain Trail until you reach the large lake, and you will want to sail to the Pergola that sits in the middle. There should be a glowing blue orb here that you can interact with and pick up an item.
You will get a Worn Journal, which will immediately open and leave you with a more concrete explanation of the events that occurred surrounding this Mysterious Box. We won't spoil it for you, but you're definitely not going to want to miss this step.
