Mei is one of the OG Overwatch 2 heroes, carrying over from the inception of the first game. She's an icy demon that used to scare everyone on the battlefield, and even now, she's no slouch. Here's a rundown of her abilities and a few tips on improving your gameplay
Abilities explained
Name | Type | Effect |
Endothermic Blaster | Primary Fire | Short-range spray weapon that slows enemies |
Endothermic Blast Alt Fire | Secondary Fire | Long-range icicle launcher |
Cryo-Freeze | Ability | Become invulnerable and heal yourself |
Ice Wall | Ability | Create a wall in front of you |
Blizzard | Ultimate | Launch a weather control drone that freezes enemies in a wide area |
Role: Damage | Hero Passive | Damaging an enemy temporarily reduces their healing received |
Tips for playing Mei
While Mei doesn't possess a ton of health, her height and moveability ensure she can be a hard target to hit. It's best to use this to your advantage and run circles around your foes.
Thankfully, the Endothermic Blaster can damage enemies rapidly, and since it slows them down too, you can use their panic to grab the upper hand.
However, if you do run into trouble, your other abilities are perfect backups. If you find an entire team closing in on your position, be sure to put up your Ice Wall and use that opportunity to flee.
Alternatively, you can use it to block incoming fire, or if you're attempting to hold off a position, block your enemy from entering a passageway such as a chokepoint or objective.
With her Cryo-Freeze ability, Mei can basically cocoon herself to heal. Unfortunately, this leaves you open once completed. It can be a great tool to use to avoid huge attacks and ultimates.
While inside the cocoon, you can't be damaged, but afterwards, you become an easy target, meaning enemies can simply wait next to you to come out. This works best when you know allies are coming, and it can delay enemies from moving on elsewhere.
If you manage to communicate with your team, a brilliant combination is having a support character such as Mercy backup Mei.
From my experience, having Mercy assist you by boosting your health and damage is a deadly combination. If you can sync up, the pair of you can easily become a force to be reckoned with.
How to unlock Mei in Overwatch 2
Unlocking Mei requires you to play 70 games as any character. Alternatively, if you owned the first game on the account you play OW2 with, you'll get her instantly.
