Overwatch 2 has mostly been on the decline after hitting a player count peak back in January, but as of Season 12 the game still boasts a respectable player count.
Player count for Season 12
These figures are estimated because Blizzard doesn't release its player number figures directly, but according to Active Player, Overwatch 2 has had an average of 24 million players over the last 30 days.
While ActivePlayer considers all platforms, it's essentially still an estimate. Remember that not all platforms are open about their player bases.
For something more concrete, we can look at SteamCharts, which uses the official Steam numbers. This is a much smaller selection of players (being one way to play on just a single platform), but the ups and downs are likely representative of other platforms, too.
As of August 2024, Overwatch 2 on Steam has seen an average of 32,000 players daily. This is the highest daily average the game has ever had on Steam, so Season 12 has certainly drawn some players back to the game.
It's also had a player peak of 58,937. This is the third-highest peak since the game launched on Steam, with the number nearly doubling since the start of 2024.
Daily player count
With Season 12 in full swing, we can see the typical fluctuation of players that happens when people.
The start of the Season 11 saw an average daily player count of 6.7 million, and it's only dropped by less than 200,000 since to 6.5 million.
This number has only increased, with the average daily player count sitting around 6.3 million. It seems that while the monthly player number may decline, there's no shortage of players jumping in day after day. If you were worried about matchmaking times suffering, you should be okay.
What do these figures mean?
Despite a previous spike in numbers in Overwatch 2 thanks to the introduction of Mauga back in January, the veneer seems to have gradually dissipated, with the player count seeing some steep declines.
This may be a result of some of the balance changes at the start of Season 12, and in the introduction of the new hero, Juno.
What was Overwatch 2's player count at launch?
Overwatch 1 previously hit 7 million players in its first week and became Blizzard's fastest-selling console game of all time. Meanwhile, Overwatch 2 is reported to have had over 37 million players during its first month, according to an Activision Q3 earnings report.
Activision is usually tight-lipped about the exact player count, but this information is safe to assume according to the report and the tweet from the official Overwatch account listed above.
