Pokemon Scarlet and Violet are finally here, and developer Game Freak are promising to introduce a sleuth of massive changes to switch up the formula. After the success of Pokémon Arceus, many are hoping the series will follow with the more open-ended nature of that title for the new instalments.

As a result, the big question on everyone’s mind is whether Pokemon Scarlet and Violet will be stepping in an open-world direction. While trailers have claimed this would be the case with hints towards it being in gameplay, now its arrival is here, we finally have a definitive answer as to whether Pokemon Scarlet and Violet has made the jump to open-world.

Is Pokémon Scarlet and Violet Open-World?

Now Pokemon Scarlet and Violet has officially been released, we can confirm that the game is definitely open-world. Players will be able to explore the region of Paldea. You’ll be able to capture Pokemon, explore towns, or tackle one of the multiple quest lines that are available for the player to track down and complete.

Players will find that Pokemon Scarlet and Violet is broken down into three quest paths to follow. Each of these offer a different experience and allow you to tackle objectives in a non-linear fashion, such as taking on gym leaders in any order. If you’re curious to know what these quest lines are, here’s everything you need to know:

  • Victory Road: The traditional Pokémon experience, allowing players to visit multiple gyms around the world. You can do this in any order you want, meaning it can be as hard or as easy as you like.
  • Path of Legends: Here you will be hunting down Herba Mystica, which are guarded by powerful Pokémon. You’ll need to be prepared to tackle these as they will test your skill.
  • Starfall Street: Similar to Team Rocket, this storyline will see you tracking down the elusive Team Star. It’s a story promised to be filled with twists and turns.

You can choose which path you want to follow at any point, but it’s recommended to tackle them simultaneously, as you may find yourself overleveled for some if you stick to a singular path. Either way, Pokemon Scarlet and Violet offer you opportunities to approach the game how you want to, offering a sense of freedom unlike any other Pokemon title so far.
