It's vital to learn the best base locations in Project Zomboid, as there are a tonne of places you can potentially settle down in to survive the ensuing zombie apocalypse.

A big part of your first steps in the game involves finding a shelter for your base - though this can be difficult with all the zombies around - and the need to locate survival items like food and water. As such, knowing where the best locations are across post-apocalyptic Kentucky will help you on the way.

Rosewood fire department in Project Zomboid

Rosewood is considered one of the best starter locations, and it also comes with one of the best locations. The Rosewood Fire Department can be found toward the south of the town, east across the road from the police station and courthouse.

It's surrounded on three sides by a large metal fence, which is great for protection, meaning you just need to cover one side for complete protection. It's also close to the town suburbs, a building site, and comes with lots of storage space for survival items and gear.

West Point three manors in Project Zomboid

Another of the best base locations in Project Zomboid is the West Point three manors, which can be found west of the city. It's located on the edge of the river, next to a lake on the other side that's surrounded by forest.

These are three large houses that all come with fences, giving you a wealth of choices for where to shack up. You can even build defences between all of them to make an even bigger base.

Due to its location, you will need a car to scavenge and travel effectively, but it's far away from the zombie population.

For survival, it's also incredible for players with high fishing or trapping and gives you an infinite source of water for when the power goes out. If you start in West Point, travelling here is your best bet.

Ranch north of Rosewood in Project Zomboid

North of Rosewood is a tonne of farmland, where you can find lots of ranches and farmhouses. You can typically pick any of these due to how isolated they are, but the one pictured above is still close enough to town for you to do scavenging runs within one day.

There's lots of perfect land for farming here, and the surrounding areas have warehouses that contain food, residential areas with lots of varied loot, and army barracks where you can get better clothing, some weapons, and a sledgehammer if you're lucky. It's also a great place for you to set off on trips to other parts of the map due to its central location.

Isolated house in Muldraugh in Project Zomboid

Muldraugh is the biggest starting location, meaning it's full of zombies that make it hard to find a place of shelter. However, on the northeast side of the town, just north of the trailer park area, you can find an isolated house that is surrounded by a high fence

It's not so remote that you need to travel for looting and scavenging, but it's out of the way enough that you don't need to worry too much about zombies. You also only have to do a little work to fully protect it by blocking off the driveway to the main road.

To the north is a farm that you can use to get farming equipment, and the rest of the town is a short scavenging trip away, meaning you'll always be able to find the things you need.

Farm west of Riverside in Project Zomboid

Our final choice for the best base locations is the farm west of Riverside. Riverside is split into the main city along the river, a trailer park and industrial area to the southwest, and a large country club to the south.

The farm is located between the main city and the industrial area, and I found it to be the perfect hub for visiting both locations to scavenge.

Another great feature of the farm is how easy it is to clear out, as there are usually a handful of zombies, with the rest flocking to the nearby highways that are far away for you to stay safe.

With plenty of farmable land, a good location near other important areas, and proximity to the river, the Riverside farm is a perfect place to settle down for the long term.

That's all for our selection of the best base locations in Project Zomboid, and now you know five areas that are perfect to stay at during the undead apocalypse.
