Ageing up horses in The Sims 4 Horse Ranch isn’t as simple as it sounds as it doesn’t tell you how to do it without waiting for your equestrian friends to naturally age themselves.

If you'd like to sneak a peek at your adorable foals ahead of time and age them up prematurely, stick around and I'll show you how - with both cheats and in-game options.

Ageing up horses

The only main methods to age up horses are to either wait for them to naturally age or by feeding them an Age-Up Treat. The Cats & Dogs treats will not work for horses, though, as you'll need a horse-specific Age-Up Treat.

You can also age up a horse via Create-a-Sim by accessing CAS Full Edit mode. This will give you access to the horse's age, name, traits, and other menus that would otherwise be locked in-game.

To access full CAS mode, follow these steps:

  • Open the cheat box (press CTRL + Shift + C if on PC)
  • Type and enter 'testingcheats on' in the cheat box
  • Type fulleditmode
  • Press enter
  • Hold down the shift key and click on a household member
  • Select 'Modify in CAS'

Once you've selected that, you'll be whisked off to CAS where you can then edit their appearance and age as you wish.

To get the age-up treat for horses in Horse Ranch, follow these steps:

  • Travel to The Oak Barrel Tavern in the New Appaloosa neighbourhood
  • Click on the Bits & Bales Mercantile grocery store in town (the shop is only open from 7 AM to 10 PM so plan your trip accordingly)
  • Choose the option to 'Shop for groceries and goods'
  • Scroll through the list until you see the brown Horse Age-Up Treat for 150 Simoleons
  • The treat works in much the same way as the Age-Up treat for cats and dogs. To use it, simply click on the horse you wish to age up and select 'Horse Care'
  • Then click the option to 'Feed Age-Up Treat'

If you're using the treat to turn a horse into an elder horse, you'll discover that you'll be able to do the same interactions with them. You'll still be able to go for rides with elder horses, however, they will tire more easily and require more sleep.

Elder horses will no longer be able to breed with other horses. For more tips check out this guide on how to breed horses, which goes through the process and lists the secret foal traits you can get from breeding.

How to stop horses ageing

Alternatively, if you wish to keep your horses forever young, you can do so by following these steps:

  • Open the options menu - this is the symbol of three dots in the top right corner of the screen
  • Click 'Game Options'
  • Select 'Gameplay'
  • Set the Auto Age (Played Households) option to 'No'

This will also freeze your Sims from ageing in the household, however, although Sims can be aged up prematurely by blowing out candles on a cake regardless.
