If you're looking to win gold in all the horse competitions with this pack and complete the Championship Rider Aspiration, you'll need to know how to train horses in The Sims 4 Horse Ranch and max out all their skills.

Below, I've listed all horse skills and the best ways to train them - you can also check out which competitions require each one in the game, so you'll know which ones to focus on!

How do you train horses?

Horses can be trained in competitions, which are available to enter from 7 AM to 7 PM each day by clicking on a Community Board to see the options you can choose from (you can buy a Community Board from the build mode catalogue if you're struggling to find one in town).

Alternatively, you can visit the Equestrian Centre in town, which will have all of the same options to train or enter competitions.

There are five horse competitions, including the Ultimate Horse Competition. Each competition focuses on and judges two of your horses' skills, whereas the Ultimate Competition will judge all four, as well as your Sim's Riding skill.

See the table below for ways to train each Horse skill and each competition skill requirement.

Horse Riding

Basic Horse Riding skill is needed at varying levels across all horse competitions.

Simply spend time riding your horse. To ride click on your horse and select the 'Mount' option. Then click on your horse again and choose the type of ride you wish.

You can also purchase Horse Riding skill books, volumes 1-3 at a bookshelf.

You can build the Temperament Skill by socialising with your horse, speak to it enough and it will become more mellow and buck less often.

Show Jumping

Train your horse at a Horse Jump. The Horse Jump can be purchased in the build mode catalogue, or you can visit one for free in the Riders Glen neighbourhood, (opposite the Red Roan Field lot).

You can direct your horse to train solo or you can practise with it by clicking on the Horse Jump when mounted.

Endurance

Barrel Racing

Endurance Racing

Endurance is built by going for rides with your horse.

Select your horse to mount it, then choose the option to go for either a relaxed, energetic or intense ride to build up more endurance.

You can also send your horse off for training lessons via the Community Board for a fee or via the Equestrian Centre. The price of lessons depends on your horse's level and will usually raise the level halfway.

Simply select the option 'Horse Training'. Then, select your horse and the skill you wish to raise.

Although horses count as a member of your household, like cats and dogs, they do not have their own Simology panel. This means if you want to chart the progress of your horse's skills, you'll need to click on their profile icon from your Sim's relationships tab (the fourth tab along the bottom right row).

Once you've brought up your horse's profile, you'll notice that they have four main skills:

  • Temperament
  • Agility
  • Jumping
  • Endurance

Different competitions will require certain levels of skills to enter, you'll have an increased chance of winning a competition if your horse is proficient in the required skills. Below we've listed which competitions require each skill and crucially, ways to level up each horse skill quickly.

That’s everything you need to know to smash your way through the horse competitions and max out your horse skills. For more tips and trips, check out our Sims homepage, how to get mini goats and mini sheep or even how to get hay to keep your horses well-fed and happy.
