It’s inevitable that you’re going to need plenty of Med Packs in Starfield, as there is no auto-heal functionality like there is in more casual RPGs until you earn a specific skill. However, Med Packs can be a rare commodity in the game, especially if you’re using them regularly when in heated combat scenarios.
Thankfully, there are a few tried and tested ways to ensure that you always stay stocked up on Med Packs, no matter your situation. It might just require a bit of legwork, and occasionally some spent credits. So, here is what you need to know about Med Packs in Starfield, including how to get more, where to buy them from, and how to craft other medicine supplies.
Where can you find Med Packs?
The easiest way to find Med Packs in Starfield is to look out for green and blue medical containers on the walls of building interiors. As most of the buildings in Starfield are either commercialized or industrial, it makes sense that there are plenty of first aid kits lying around to help members of staff.
As such, you’ll usually find Med Packs mounted on the walls in most of the structures you’ll enter while exploring Starfield. They’re usually mounted at head height, near the entrances of most buildings. Be sure to keep an eye out and loot when you can.
In addition, you’d be surprised at how many common enemies carry Med Packs with them. If you aren’t already, be sure to loot as many enemies as you can after killing them. You’re very likely to find a Med Pack or two on them, as well as a bunch of ammo for your weapons.
Where can you buy Med Packs?
If you’re still running short on Med Packs after looting everything in sight, then your next best option is to purchase a bunch from Medical Centres.
Medical Centres can be found in most major cities in Starfield, and there will always be an NPC there who can sell you a few in exchange for cold hard credits. One of the easiest Medical Centres to find early in the game is located in The Well, a dark underbelly located beneath the MAST District in New Atlantis.
To find it, get off the subway and turn right. Head to the end of the platform to find an elevator that will take you down to The Well. Then, you’ll see the Med Bay directly in front of you and to the right. The doctor in there can heal any of your wounds instantly for a few credits, and you can trade with her to buy around six Med Packs for yourself.
It’s worth returning to the same Med Bay in a day or so for more, as NPC inventories will restock by then. Alternatively, you can hunt out other Med Bays in other cities to buy more Med Packs elsewhere.
Med Packs may appear expensive at first glance, but Starfield is very generous with how many credits it gives out. It’s definitely worth investing in having a few spares, given the alternative is dying. If you’re struggling for money, you can always turn to a life of crime and smuggle contraband for cash.
Other ways to heal in Starfield
You don’t always need to use a Med Pack to heal in Starfield. If you get to the end of a mission and find yourself in low health, consider sleeping in a bed for a few hours to shake off the aches and pains.
As explained in our Starfield waiting guide, sleeping in a bed will restore you to full health, and can also cure some afflictions, provided they aren’t too serious. In addition, you’ll also receive a well-rested bonus, which will provide you with a 10% XP boost for a limited time.
How to craft medicine
While Med Packs are the primary way to heal in Starfield, you can also craft other medicinal products to improve your physical capabilities.
To craft some of your own, you’ll need to find a Pharmaceutical Lab, which acts as a workbench for crafting medicine in Starfield. You can find one early in the game by heading to The Lodge and exploring the basement area. It's just to the left of the main entrance, right as you walk in.
Alternatively, you can also add one to your ship if you purchase the right module for it.
You’ll need a few specific resources to craft medicinal items. Here are some crafting recipes that we’ve found so far:
- AMP: x2 Argon, x1 Metabolic Agent, x1 Toxin
- Antibiotic Paste: x1 Antibiotics, x1 Heal Paste, x2 Carboxylic Acids
- Antibiotics: x1 Antimicrobial, x1 Membrane
- Bandages: x1 Fiber, x1 Sealant.
- Heal Paste: x1 Analgesic, x1 Membrane.
- Immobilizer: x1 Sealant, x1 Structural.
- Infused Bandages – x1 Heal Paste, x2 Sedative, x1 Bandage
- Injector: x1 Metabolic Agent, x1 Membrane
- Penicillin X: x1 Metabolic Agent, x1 Membrane, x2 Antimicrobial
- Red Trench: x1 Tetrafluorides, x1 Battlestim, x1 CQB-X
- Snake Oil: x1 Chlorine, x1 Sedative, x2 Metabolic Agent
It doesn’t appear possible to be able to craft Med Packs in Starfield just yet. We will update this guide if we find a way to do so.
