The opening quest to Starfield's Shattered Space expansion is What Remains, which tasks you with making your way through a mysterious starstation and finding out what's going on. Here's our walkthrough of the quest so you can get to the meat of the DLC.

Starting What Remains

You'll automatically start What Remains when you begin the Shattered Space expansion. In short, fast travel to any clear star system where there's no active quest or event; here you'll find the station and trigger the quest.

Investigating The Oracle

Your first port of call is to dock with the station and enter onboard. You'll be greeted with a zero-G environment and some empty hallways.

Following these will lead you to a room with some shiny blue substance covering one side, along with two phantoms talking to each other. As you approach, one of them appears to change colour and becomes hostile, forcing you to kill them.

Take the Oracle Access Card from the dead body and head over to the remaining phantom, Sirak. He'll phase out and then you'll get a new objective, leading you to a new area through a nearby door.

Find the Engineering Bay controls

Your quest here involves finding the controls for the Engineering Bay to help restore power.

As you head forward into a large room with railings over a big drop, more of the hostile phantoms will appear, so you need to defeat them in a floating firefight.

From here, head to the right and follow the marker to a small control room. Interact with the Access Card Reader on the wall to trigger the next step, marking the card for you to find.

Finding an access card

To begin with, you'll need to return to the larger room you just fought in and head down. At the bottom, there is a doorway leading into some more corridors. A phantom will also briefly appear and disappear, but ignore them.

Instead, go through the bright yellow doors on the right side wall, into the new room, and float over the railings inside.

Moving boxes in What Remains in Shattered Space in Starfield

Go downwards again, and you'll find some numbered square doorways, with boxes blocking some of them. Door three is the one you'll want, but you need to move the box first.

Look for the room up the stairs opposite the boxes, and go inside. You'll find three buttons inside; press the button for door three and the box will move. Pressing the door one button will spawn a phantom, so don't do that.

Head into the opened doorway and follow the path into a larger room. Make your way over the piping and fight the phantoms that appear. Open the hatch and go down into the bathroom.

Outside of the bathroom is a corridor leading to a multi-tiered set of floors. Go to the very top, travelling over the balcony. As you get up here, you can find a switch to open a shortcut to an area you were in previously.

Ignoring the opened door, head along the hallway ahead and go into the room on your left. Another phantom will need to be killed, but you can grab the keycard on the bed. I also found a powerful shotgun on the wall, so take that too, if that's your vibe.

Go through the shortcut you opened, fighting any phantoms that spawn in, and float back up the control room from earlier; you can now open the door just outside it with the keycard.

Restoring power

You know need to begin restoring the starstation's power, so head through the door you have just opened and interact with the computer

Clicking the buttons for turning on the power will warn you of a failure due to an out-of-place battery. Sirak will spawn in again and suggest restoring gravity to get the battery into the right place.

More enemies will attack you, so deal with them and then make your way upwards to the walkway above. Make sure you avoid the gel on the walls too, as it damages you and knocks you back.

As you get on the walkway, you'll have to find another way into the gravity control room, so follow the walkway and go into the yellow circular doorway.

Open another door, and you'll find a room of floating rubbish. Press another switch to head into a hallway with more floating stuff.

As you reach the end of this hall, you'll be notified to find a power cell. After turning around, I found mine against the right wall. You can spot it by the blue lights along the front; just place it into the receptacle to open the door.

Sirak in Gravity Room in Starfield Shattered Space What Remains quest

In the control room, you'll see Sirak next to the controls and struggling to use them in his form. Interact with them yourself and select 'Enable Gravity'. Gravity will now turn back on, forcing you to walk from now on.

A doorway will open onto the catwalk, and you'll have to get back down to the computer terminal from earlier. There are enough things to jump on to get down safely, so once you're done, interact with the computer and reconnect the second battery.

Operations Centre

The final stages of this quest involve the Operations Centre that's now become available due to the power being activated.

Head out of the room you're in and follow the corridor to the right, travelling until you get to the blue substance on the other side of the big room. On the right, you can head up some stairs to find the Operations Centre door.

Sirak changing in What Remains in Starfield Shattered Space

Inside, you will find Sirak one more time. He'll struggle to maintain his form and then turn into an enemy, spawning in some other phantoms. Take them all out and then head to the mainframe computer in the room.

You can select an option to reboot the mainframe here, and shortly after the entire station will jump to a new star system where you'll receive a transmission from the planet below.

What Remains will now be finished, while a new quest begins and directs you to land on the nearby planet in Nazra city.
