Even though The Witcher 3 launched with a wealth of content, following the weeks of its release, developer CD PROJEKT RED continued to deliver more and more quests for players to dive into. All of these were completely free and continue to soak up fans’ time with the game.

One of the post-launch quests was known as Where the Cat and Wolf Play, which managed to leave a few players stumbled. With the next-gen launch of The Witcher 3 upon us, many players are encountering it for the first time, or have simply forgotten how to complete it. If you’re stuck trying to get through Where the Cat and Wolf Play in The Witcher 3, here’s a complete walkthrough for this particular quest.

How To Complete Where The Cat And Wolf Play In The Witcher 3

Firstly, this quest has a prerequisite in order to start it. To begin Where the Cat and Wolf Play in The Witcher 3, players will need to complete a contract known as The Beast of Honorton. This can be found on notice boards in either Crow’s Perch or Oreton. Be sure to stick to the quest area, as leaving can cause the mission to fail.

After completing this quick and easy quest where you uncover some interesting details, Where the Cat and Wolf play will automatically begin. Your first objective is to investigate the area. You will have to search around the huts nearby and eventually you will see a girl running off into the distance whilst exploring one.

Outside, look for a doll and this will trigger you to use your Witcher Senses to follow the trail and eventually stumble across the girl you previously saw run away. Engage in conversation and either hand over the doll or use your Axii sign to gain her trust. By doing this, the girl will drop a revelation of what happened, explaining how another Witcher came to the village, slaughtered the monsters, but killed all the civilians in the process besides this girl.

Again, use your Witcher Senses to track down a Witcher Amulet and the mysterious Witcher known as Gaetan. Speaking to Gaetan, you can probe him for some answers. He claims that after he completed his contract and vanquished the monsters, the villagers tried to con him out of handing over any coins, attacking him in the process.

Gaetan also reveals that he did in fact kill the villagers in an act of rage, but decided to spare the girl, known as Millie, due to the resemblance she held to his sister. It’s at this point a major decision comes up, allowing you to either kill or spare Gaetan in The Witcher 3. Each has its own rewards, which we’ll dive into now.

Kill Gaetan

If you feel Gaetan needs to pay for his crimes, you can challenge him to a fight. However, be aware this can be quite difficult, as Gaetan has a few Witcher tricks up his sleeve. He’ll ask you to heal up first to make it an even playing field. Unfortunately, this is a trick as he’ll attempt to blind you as you do so and then proceed to attack you using a variety of Witcher signs, such as Quen.

After you emerge from the fight victorious, with Gaetan slain, you will gain 200 XP and then you can loot him to obtain Teigr - a powerful Witcher steel sword. It’s also worth noting that if you don’t want to go down this route, this weapon can also be obtained by completing the Take What You Want quest, which proceeds Where the Cat and Wolf Play if Gaetan is spared.

Spare Gaetan

If you’re feeling humble, you can choose to spare Gaetan’s life and you will be given 200 XP as a token of gratitude. Again, it will also begin the Take What You Want quest, but you want to ensure you finish Where the Cat and Wolf Play as it’s a time-sensitive mission.

Regardless of the choice you make, trek back to Millie and a cutscene will ensue. Without giving away any spoilers, it all manages to wrap up fairly nicely with Millie’s story tied up. Your quest reward will come to you in the form of 40 crowns for your hard-earned trouble.

It doesn’t end there, though. You can visit Oreton again a few days later and discover Millie calling out your name. If you approach her, a conversation will begin and she will gift you a thank you card, which contains a drawing of you and Millie. It doesn’t have any gameplay benefits, but it is a heart-warming moment in an incredibly bleak world.

And that’s everything you need to know about Where the Cat and Wolf Play in The Witcher 3. It’s relatively straightforward, however, the choice at the end can throw some players off.
