There's nothing quite like the retro nostalgia of playing Tony Hawk's Pro Skater and Tony Haw's Pro Skater 2, and with Activision remastering the fan-favourite games as Pro Skater 1 + 2, the two have been brought together in a beautiful union of the ages. If you want to stay behind after class with School, hit the mean streets of Streets, or hang out in Hangar, now you can with a 2020 twist. One of Pro Skater's best perks was Free Skate and the ability to roam around at your own free will. If you need a reminder, here's how to Free Skate in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2.
Why Free Skate?
With so many levels to pick from in Pro Skater 1 + 2, we're spoiled for choice. However, it's a little too easy to get bogged down with objectives or get caught up watching the countdown timer to actually bask in a level. Considering so much work has clearly gone into redesigning the classic levels, it makes sense that you'd want to take your time and explore with Free Skate.
You can also think of Free Skate as a training mode. With no objectives or limits, players can try out their tricks without the pressure of having an end objective. Free Skate is available in both single and multiplayer, meaning you and your friends can also get together and make the most of the mode.
How To Free Skate
Free Skate is simple to get to and well worth the effort if you know where to look. Here's how:
1. Select "Skate Tours" from the main menu
2. The third option is "Ranked & Free Skate"
3. Pick whichever level you want and choose "Free Skate" or "Solo Session".
4. You're good to go with Free Skate
Free Skate Perks
Unlike some games where you'll have to progress through the game to unlock certain bits, Free Skate is ready to go from the very start. There's no frustrating grind or need to complete objectives to try out Free Skate, so you and your pals can skate around at your leisure straight away.
Alongside the THPS Tour and THPS 2 Tour, the Ranked and Free Skate chapter of the game has plenty to sink your teeth into. There's a whole host of modes, with Speed Run, Free Skate, and Single Session - also coming with online leaderboards if you want that competitive edge.
Some 20 and 21 years after Tony Hawk's Pro Skater and its sequel skated into our lives, there's no denying both games are looking better than ever. Instead of a simple cash-grab, it looks likes developer Neversoft has kept the core of what made the originals so popular, while adding something new. Basically, Free Skate keeps those virtual training wheels on so players can get to grips with the "grind" of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 before hitting the halfpipe for real.
