Will SMITE shut down when SMITE 2 launches?
With Titan Forge Games announcing SMITE 2, there's concern among players whether the developer will shut down the servers for SMITE 1 once the new game is released.
SMITE 2 is here! Titan Forge Games has officially announced SMITE 2 is on its way, with the 2014 title finally getting a well-needed sequel.
The third-person console MOBA will be coming in "Spring 2024", where Alpha testing will lead to a limited Beta before a full release of the game later down the pipeline.
But what will happen to the original SMITE? Will SMITE shut down when the sequel launches? Well, Titan Forge Games has now revealed its fate.
Will SMITE shut down?
SMITE 2's launch will not see the original SMITE title shut down. Instead, Titan Forge Games intends to continue support for the first game alongside SMITE 2 "for the foreseeable future", although they expect "most" players to make the transition.
This doesn't mean that you'll get the same treatment on SMITE 1 though. Despite support continuing, the soon-to-be-added 130th God will be the last to ever come to the legacy title. The 131st God in the series will be Hecate, and she will be exclusive to SMITE 2, which will have a revisited and smaller God pool upon its launch.
SMITE will still get some new content updates, with Cross-gen skins being added through the Divine Legacy programme, but for the most part, this live-service model will mainly consist of battle passes and new challenges.
Titan Forge Games explains SMITE 1's fate
In a preview event attended by GGRecon, Titan Forge Games said, "SMITE 1 will remain available for players who want to play it and we will have updates coming regularly to SMITE 1 for the foreseeable future."
"We aren't kicking anybody out of SMITE 1, I think that's really important to us. If you are playing on an older PC or an Xbox One / PS4 and don't have the money to upgrade, we want you to be able to keep playing," said Alex Cantatore, Titan Forge Games Executive Producer.
The developers confirmed that there will be a studio still dedicated to SMITE 1, although it will be smaller in size than that working on the sequel.
SMITE 2's full launch isn't expected to arrive until, at least, late 2024, if not 2025, but you can begin enjoying the sequel as of Spring 2024 when Alpha tests begin.
