Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom lets players save and load their game from wherever they like, which is a breath of fresh air compared to other RPGs out there (cough, Elden Ring).

However, the method by which you save your game isn’t immediately obvious. In addition, there are a couple of caveats to be taken into account when it comes to saving your progress.

Does Zelda: TOTK have autosave?

First of all, it’s important to know that Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom features a fairly robust auto-save feature. As soon as you enter a new area or advance the story in a significant way, Tears of the Kingdom creates an autosave file automatically.

This means that if Link comes to his demise unexpectedly, the game will reload from the most recent autosave. Thankfully, this usually isn’t too far behind where you just were in the game, so you shouldn’t have to worry about saving manually too often.

How to save the game manually

If you’d rather not rely on the autosave feature, you can save the game manually whenever you like.

  • To do this, press the ‘Plus’ button and navigate to the very right-hand tab of the menu.
  • Here, you will see an option to ‘Save’, which will bookmark your progress wherever you currently are in the game.

However, there is a caveat to saving your game that is not immediately obvious. You can only store one manual save data at a time, meaning if you save more than once, it will overwrite your previous manual save.

What’s more, you can only have up to five autosave files at any one time. These automatically overwrite each other as you progress through the game. So, if you were hoping to keep a few specific save files lying around to revisit at a later date, then you’re sadly out of luck.

How to load game saves

Loading a game save file in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is just as simple as saving.

  • Press the ‘Plus’ button to open up the inventory menu, and navigate to the right-most tab once again.
  • Below the ‘Save’ button is the option to ‘Load’. Pressing this will bring up a list of all your available save game data.
  • Select the game file that you wish to load and you will be transported to that part of your playthrough once again.

Loading a game save file manually can be helpful if you find yourself stuck on a specific part of the game and want to go back to better prepare yourself. This can also be helpful if you encounter a game-breaking bug that can only be resolved by loading a previously saved data file. Thankfully, we haven’t needed to utilize this functionality just yet, but your mileage may vary.
