League of Legends Blue Essence is a vital currency that is used to purchase Champions or unlock them from shards, and we've got everything you need if you were wondering how to get and use them in-game.

League of Legends has multiple ways to earn Champions and skins, such as Orange Essence or Champion and skin shards. However, Blue Essence is the main way to unlock Champions in the game without shelling out hard cash, so it is well worth staying up to date with the currency.

Thankfully we've got all of the details below, so here is how to get and how to use Blue Essence in League of Legends.

There are three primary sources for garnering Blue Essence in League of Legends:

  • Levelling up
  • Completing missions
  • Disenchanting shards

Each time you increase your Summoner level you will receive some Blue Essence, and also receive Champion Capsules. Opening a Champion Capsule will grant rewards, including some Blue Essence.

Many missions also grant Blue Essence upon completion. Be sure to check the rewards of the currently available missions to see which ones grant Blue Essence. The First Win of the Day mission always grants Blue Essence, making it a great way to consistently add to your BE stock.

Disenchanting is another major source of Blue Essence. As we will go into below, Blue Essence is used to unlock Champions through shards. Shards are acquired from chests, and can either be unlocked, or disenchanted. The rarer the shard is, the more Blue Essence you will receive for disenchanting it.

The main purpose of Blue Essence is to purchase Champions and unlock them from Champion Shards. When you receive a reward in League of Legends, it often comes in the form of a shard, and this means you do not actually own the reward itself, as it must be unlocked.

You can also use Blue Essence to purchase Champions directly from the store. This will cost more than the amount required to unlock a shard, but it is a way to get the exact Champions that you want.

The things you can do with Blue Essence include:

  • Purchase champions
  • Upgrade champion shards
  • Upgrade a champion mastery to level 6 or 7
  • Purchase additional rune pages
  • Change your summoner name
  • Purchase Starter Series Eternal Pass for 14,750 BE
  • Purchase content in the Essence Emporium
    • Purchase Hextech Crafting mystery champion shards
    • Purchase chromas when they are on sale for BE
    • Purchase Essence Emporium exclusive content

That is it for our League of Legends Blue Essence guide, showing you how to get and use the special currency in Riot's wildly popular MOBA game.
